I remember the first time I picked up a self-help book...it was underwhelming.

I know, I know it’s crazy! I love talking about mindset and personal development and helping others see how incredible it is too. But when I first read a self-help book, I was not in a good place mentally.

Even though I was reading about shifting my mindset, I felt like it was too good to be true. No one can actually make their lives better by just reading books, right? Oh, and actually thinking about doing inner work and confronting my thoughts was a whole new level of “NO!”

Three years later, I reread the same book (and actually finished it), and it was completely different. It was different because I went into it eager to learn and better myself. I wanted to change and grow.

So all this to say, being in a state of eagerness and wanting to learn is the best place to be when reading these books. If not, it’s just going to sound like a ton of work you really don’t want to do. Because let’s face it, personal development is hard. They don’t call it inner work for anything.

These are 5 books you must read for personal growth:

1. You are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life

This is the first book I read (and reread) on my personal development journey. I still can't believe I stopped reading it because I couldn't put it down when I read it the second time. Sincero has a way of using humor to get her points across, and honestly, it works really well. She uses stories, gives advice, and easy exercises to help you uncover limiting beliefs that have been sabotaging you and keeping you from living your best life possible!

2. Discover Your Dharma

"Dharma" has many definitions, but this book uses the definition of your soul's life purpose. Times are changing, and we're beginning to ask ourselves deeper questions like "why are we here?" and "what's my purpose on Earth?" And there may be a conflicting inner dialogue that goes something like, "Why does it matter what my purpose is? I'm here on Earth to live, go to school, make money, have a family, and die." Verses, "I'm definitely here for some reason, and coincidences are not real, I'm here to accomplish something very specific."

Ayurveda is an ancient holistic healing system developed in India, and Sahara Rose incorporates it into finding your dharma. This book provides in-depth questions to answer and ways to use your doshas (Ayurvedic mind-body types) and chakras (energy centers in the body) to find and embody your dharma.

This book is more spiritual and uses consciousness, energy, and belief as the driving forces behind living your happiest and most joyous life.

3. Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself

Most of us go throughout the day with a habitual vibration. This means you wake up in the morning and immediately remember who you are, where you are, and what your life circumstances are. And when you remember these things, you start to feel the way you did the day before, which keeps you in the same mental and emotional state as before.

Joe Dispenza uses neuroscience to teach you how to change this habitual vibration and become the version of you that you deeply desire. For those skeptical of personal development, this book will give you evidence backed up by science that all it takes to change your life is to change your mindset.

4. The Power of your Subconscious Mind

Your subconscious mind is so powerful, and it's running your life. Your subconscious mind interferes with your career, your relationships, your finances, and more. The more you understand your subconscious, the more likely you will shift your beliefs to change your life. This book also gives you simple exercises to do. And the best part is that you do most of them in bed right before you go to sleep, how easy!

If you feel stuck in negative patterns and want to learn more about your subconscious and rewire it, you need to read this book!

5. Ask and It Is Given: Learning to Manifest Your Desires

Although this book is about manifestation, it goes much deeper than that. Manifestation is just a byproduct of being in the right mindset, an abundance mindset. Abraham Hicks drops tons of gems and words of wisdom in this book about receiving your desires by simply feeling good. It is your birthright to receive everything you desire, but most people feel as if their life is unfair because they are pushing against their flow. Your natural state is happiness and joy, and if you're feeling anything other than that, something is up.

This book will teach you about your emotions and thoughts and how to use them to your advantage to direct you towards the things you desire. It's so important to keep an open mind and remind yourself that you deserve everything you desire.
